Why Portuguese Culture Matters for Language Learning
I recently came across this reddit post joking about Portugal implementing a cultural test as a citizenship requirement and what that might look like. While these questions would lowkey make me spiral if they were real, I do think understanding Portuguese culture (and history) gives depth to your language learning and helps you connect more naturally with the language.
From the Age of Discoveries to the traditions of Fado and the significance of festivals like São João or Santo António, cultural knowledge adds colour and context to your vocabulary and listening practice. You’ll start to see how idioms, expressions, and sentence rhythms reflect Portugal’s way of life and worldview. Personally, for me, understanding the word "saudade", and how that concept intertwines with fado, changed the way I listen to Portuguese music. I developed a new level of appreciation for it despite not understand all (most) of the words. In the case of Fado, it’s more than nostalgia or missing something, and it brings out softness and passion that are woven together into the language and the culture.
Tying this all into language exams, cultural awareness can also make a real difference in your exam performance. Many reading, listening, and writing tasks include everyday situations, traditions, or references to Portuguese life. Knowing that "pastel de nata" isn’t just a pastry but a cultural symbol, or that "25 de Abril" marks the country’s democratic revolution, can help you understand texts and write with confidence. In short, learning about Portuguese culture doesn’t just prepare you for the test - it helps you sound and become more authentic and thoughtfully connected to the people and stories behind the language.
In case this is the first time you’re considering exploring this side of learning Portuguese, here’s a few resources/creators that I think provide some really good entry points:
Firstly, I really like 2 youtubers: simpleton portuguese and learning portuguese with Leo. They both provide language lessons/resources, but also videos discussing Portuguese culture, history, geography. Simpleton Portuguese has some great videos where he’s walking through historic villages/towns in Portugal and tells you all about it as he walks (like this one). These were really great for visualising/contextualising the language he used, but also for learning something new about Portugal at the same time.
I also really like (this B1 playlist): great for listening and for learning some classic Portuguese history/stories
Finally, there are several books about Portuguese history. To be honest I’m lacking in this department and I’ve only read one ("A Brief History of Portugal" by Jeremy Black) which was a pretty good all-rounder, but I know there are others like "Very Short History of Portugal" by A H De Oliveira Marques which is on my to-read list.
